Learn to defend yourselves in difficult situations. We will ensure that all the attendees feel comfortable, enjoy themselves and get the most they can out of the day. The workshop is a practical, hands-on experience where you learn fast, effective and easy to remember self-defense techniques.
 
Suitable for all ages 16 and up, for all women and other marginalised genders (including trans women and non-binary people)
 
This is an empowerment self-defence course designed specifically for marginalised communities of Aotearoa New Zealand. This course has been developed by Kia Haumaru, an organisation with over thirty years of experience bringing the kaupapa to Aotearoa New Zealand. Self-defence is about disrupting violence to give yourself a chance to get away.
 
Learn simple and effective skills for increasing personal and collective safety in a wide variety of situations. Learn about your rights, setting boundaries and how to disable a larger, stronger attacker.
 
This course will cover:
Basic physical techniques – kicks, punches, other strikes and blocks
Some evasive techniques
Interactive kōrero about relationship safety
 
The course will take 6.5 hours (incl a 30 min lunch break).
 
Self-defence and violence can be confronting subjects to engage with, particularly for folk who have experienced harm in the past. We make it our top priority to create a safe, non-judgmental space for whakawhanaungatanga (connecting) and akoranga (learning).
